"Zen in its essence is the art of seeing into the nature of one´s own being, and it points the way from bondage to freedom. By making us drink right from the fountain of life it liberates us from all the yokes under which we finite beings are usually suffering in this world." D.T. Suzuki

Zen Pilgrimage

The ancient Zen monks spent much of their time on pilgrimage and walking meditation was an important part of their practice. Here are some pictures from a thousand-mile walking pilgrimage on the ancient  sacred route on Shikoku Japan and a seven-hundred mile walk straight up the centre of the Island of Britain. On both walks, Roshi was supported by the generosity of well-wishers along the way – good-hearted people who willingly put offerings into his alms bowl. A pilgrimage like this is an ongoing good-news story showing that there are many generous people in the world. The ancient Buddhist teachings say that the consequence of this kind of generous attitude is happiness.
